[Bldg-sim] Adaptive Facades: Performance Prediction using Computer Simulation

Performance Network workshops at performance.network
Tue Dec 5 11:40:08 PST 2017

This workshop will teach you to parametrically design and analyze kinetic facades to improve energy performance and indoor thermal comfort. A case study will teach you to examine and evaluates the effect of facade panel shading dynamics on indoor thermal comfort and energy efficiency. Control of solar radiation will be done by calculating the size and movement of a modular unit of the shading panel in response to environmental changes. Semi-transparent photovoltaic (PV) panels will be studied as a panel material for shading and energy generation. The live workflow demonstration will be performed by simulation of the building with integrated shading devices using a GECO-Grasshopper (parametric extension for Rhinoceros) workflow.

About the Presenter
Ben Bacha is an architect, PhD candidate and researcher interested specialized in bioclimatic architecture with a focus in building energy efficiency, adaptive building envelopes, intelligent and kinetic facades, parametric design, and solar control. In 2014, he joined the Bioclimatic Architecture and Environment Laboratory at the University of Biskra which is well situated in a hot and dry climate to research adaptive facades, thermal comfort, energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality, outdoor microclimate, urban heat island and other aspects of sustainable architecture design.
