Description

Adaptive facades are building envelope systems that can adapt their thermo-optical properties to transient boundary conditions, thanks to an
automatic intelligence embedded into the material and/or to an external decision making system. The main aim of integrating these controllable
façade technologies in buildings is to improve building performance according to one or more performance objective, i.e. energy efficiency,
indoor environmental quality, energy flexibility. Although presenting a large technical potential, their real-world uptake is quite low. In fact
there is a lack of thorough understanding of the possible benefits and risks of integrating such technologies in buildings, due to the
inability to measure their performance in a reliable way at a design stage or during building operations.

In this workshop a list of requirements, challenges and limitations to predict the performance of building integrated adaptive façades by means
of simulation will be presented, including co-simulation and advanced control simulation. The compliance to these requirements of the most
adopted building performance simulation tools will be discussed. Subsequently the most suitable building performance simulation
strategies and methods available to overcome BPS tools limitations will be described.

Finally a couple of design case studies will be presented to demonstrate the application of these novel building performance simulation
strategies:

1. Control optimization of smart glazing;

2. Adaptive insulation design and control optimization.

Presenter

Fabio Favoino is a researcher at Cambridge University with degrees in Building Engineering from the Technical University of Turin in Italy. Fabio's main research area is to enhance the achievement of Zero Energy Building target by means of adaptive and responsive building envelope technologies and materials.
