Origami-inspired structures: Strengthening glass-and-steel by folding paper

Legendary computational designer Neil Katz has been building his own parametric working methods, working in AutoCAD LISP years before Grasshopper or Dynamo were created.

Neil's latest project is a collaboration with structural engineer Joshua Schultz to understand what we can learn about structural efficiency from the ancient art of origami. Neil and Joshua will present their work on Performance Network.

Origami-inspired Parametrics for Architectural and Structural Efficiency

To paraphrase Robert le Ricolais, the art of the structure is where to put the folds. Neil and Joshua will be presenting an introduction to the fundamental concepts of origami, tensegrity and architecture. These concepts will be used to examine several architectural strategies and highlight examples of how architectural expression can help or hinder structural efficiency.

Parametric studies of origami-inspired structural systems will be presented and quantified as a baseline for designers. The structural implications of the layouts have been analyzed with 3D FEA software using scripts to automate the analysis. Several important design concepts are highlighted in the results and interpreted in light of the Airy Stress function.

Presenters

Neil Katz
Skidmore, Owings & Merrill - Chicago, IL - http://www.som.com - Neil Katz is an architect and Associate at Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. He uses a "computational design" approach to design, and has used this methodology in developing geometry (simple and "complex") and as a way of analyzing and designing in response to many project goals, including environmental and sustainability goals. "Computational design", aspects of which include algorithmic and parametric design as well as building information modeling (BIM), is as much a way of thinking about design as using and developing tools for design.

Joshua Schultz
MSOE University - Milwaukee, WI - http://www.msoe.edu - Joshua Schultz is a structural engineer, clinical assistant professor and director at MSOE University. He specializes in structural optimization, dynamics and analytical modeling of systems. Prior to entering academia, Joshua worked as a structural engineer at Skidmore Owings and Merrill and Stutzki Engineering. Joshua is a licensed engineer and holds bachelor, master and doctorate degrees in the areas of architectural and structural engineering.
