EMS can be used to supplement standard control options in EnergyPlus with logic tailored to the needs of your project. Originally developed to allow simulation of digital energy management systems used in real buildings, EMS is so flexible that the applications are almost unlimited! Some example applications include:
*        Precision control over simulated behaviour for HVAC systems, glazing, lighting etc, e.g. override default EnergyPlus control linkage between economisers and heat recovery or adding manufacturer controls logic to equipment such as heat pumps.
*        Custom shading controls to model advanced facade systems such as multi-state electrochromic and thermochromic glazing.
*        Linking one system with another (e.g. link earth tube to HVAC inlet).
*        Advanced control of natural ventilation actuators based on CO2 or moisture levels within the building.
*        Special outputs not normally provided by EnergyPlus (e.g. CIBSE TM52 outputs).
*        Researching new building systems or the impact of non-standard occupant behaviour patterns.
DesignBuilder includes some important extensions to the standard EnergyPlus EMS system making it easier and more flexible allowing DB EMS programs to be reused and shared:
*        Portable scripts allow DesignBuilder EMS code to be shared for use in multiple projects.
*        Dialogs make it easy to add EMS components such as actuators, sensors and internal variables simply by selecting from lists.
*        Loops mean that zones and other objects don't have to be referenced by name.
*        A wide range of attribute data such as control setpoints and schedules can be accessed directly from the model.
*        Colour syntax highlighting makes the scripts easier to read.
