Position Summary:

Berkeley Lab’s Building Technology and Urban Systems Division has an
opening for a Senior Scientific Engineering Associate. In this position,
the Senior Scientific Engineering Associate will provide scientific and
engineering support for research in the development and integration of
building energy simulation tools into research and practice to improve the
design and operation of energy-efficient new and existing commercial
buildings and urban systems. Collaborate with BTUS staff on related
projects.

What You Will Do:

   -

   Broadly apply principles, theories, and/or technical concepts in science
   and engineering to perform research and analyses in the areas of building
   energy simulation and energy efficiency for new and existing commercial
   buildings.


   -

   Provide resolutions to a diverse range of complex technical problems
   related to building energy simulation and energy efficiency for commercial
   buildings
   -

   Use technical concepts and Lab policies and procedures to solve a wide
   range of difficult problems related to evaluation of the performance of
   real buildings in imaginative and practical ways
   -

   Develop web based applications for building energy simulations using
   EnergyPlus, OpenStudio, and related tools.
   -

   Develop and/or assist in developing presentations for conferences,
   meetings and workshops, and give presentations at conferences, meetings and
   workshops.
   -

   Interact with other researchers within and outside of LBNL regarding
   research activities.
   -

   Actively participate in developing proposals for funding.


Additional Responsibilities:

   -

   Assist members of the BT Department at large with related projects on
   building data, building energy simulation and building energy efficiency.


What Is Required:

   -

   Knowledge equivalent to a Masters Degree in engineering.
   -

   Demonstrated understanding of HVAC system fundamental.
   -

   Expertise in building energy efficiency measures and technologies.
   -

   Strong experience with building energy simulation tools, including but
   not limited to EnergyPlus and OpenStudio. Strong experience in computer
   programming using C/C++, Java, Ruby, Ruby on Rails, for desktop as well as
   web applications.
   -

   Demonstrated collaboration skills to work with members of project teams,
   and occasionally collaborate with industry experts.
   -

   Proven ability to work with multiple principal investigators and with
   some or all members of a project team, including participating in complex
   projects.
   -

   Proven technical writing and editing skills and ability to prepare
   materials and write sections of reports and proposals.


Additional Desired Qualifications:

   -

   Master’s degree engineering or physical sciences preferred with 5-year
   working experience; or PhD with two-year working experience.
   -

   Work experience in building industry with responsibilities for energy
   efficiency projects.
