[Bldg-sim] LEED 2009 ice arena baseline case efficiencies

Hi Chris,

Here it is. I don’t think ASHRAE 90.1 has any additional requirements but there are some rather vague requirements in the 2011 NECB and 1997 MNECB. These statements don’t belong in a code:

“Where an ice arena or a curling rink has

a heating requirement, the refrigeration system shall

incorporate means of recovering heat rejected by the

system to the extent that the heat recovered can be

used to satisfy some or all of the heating

requirements (see Appendix E).”

Appendix E:

“Heat recovered from refrigeration

equipment can be used for space heating, service

water heating or heating the soil beneath the ice

surface to prevent frost heave.”

Hi Chris,

I'd still use the Arena EE Wizard baseline described in the modeling guide. It is from 2008 and I'm not aware of anything more up to date so it's probably due for an update - the government probably just needs to create a new incentive program before they will spend the time doing it.

I can send you a copy if you need it.

Thank you Mayer. The article by Laurier Nichols is a good starting point.

Christopher,

ASHRAE had a whole cover story about an Ice Area a few months back (March 2012 and September 2015).

These may have useful information/contacts.

Hope this helps.

Hello,

I am wondering if there is a document that describes what the baseline case efficiencies should be for an arena ice plant for LEED 2009?

My suspicion is that there isn’t such a document and that one would have to apply an exceptional calculation listing the sources of information for establishing the baseline case efficiencies.
