Better Building Controls Through Simulation

<span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"">Simulation serves many roles in the building industry. For many building professionals, simulation tools (e.g., EnergyPlus, DOE-2) are a means of comparing the energy performance of alternative envelope and HVAC system designs. For individuals concerned with the development of control algorithms, these same tools are often inadequate because they lack dynamic system models that are necessary to properly design the algorithms. This talk will present a number of use cases involving simulation tools and their application to the development of building control algorithms. The talk will also touch on tools that can be used to streamline the process of testing a “simulation-proven” algorithm in a laboratory or field environment.

Prior to joining Johnson Controls, he was employed first at the National Institute of Standards and Technology and later at the Iowa Energy Center. John has a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Iowa.
